ABSTRACT
Evidence must be consistent with itself; it must be consistent with the real world; it must be consistent with the age in which it was created-but above all it must be true. Many plausible stories may seem convincing, but not all of them are trustworthy. One of the recurring concerns of those who investigate cases of deception is whether the evidence adduced by the combatants on either side can be counted upon.
