ABSTRACT
The role of the Data Protection Registrar was created by the Data Protection Act 1984.
The Registrar’s Office was set up to be an independent regulatory authority and that
remains the case. The Information Commissioner is an independent official appointed
by the Crown, reporting annually to parliament.
