ABSTRACT

The following discussion presents a description of the primary musical instruments found in Garhwal at present. Some are unique to the region and its near neighbours, while similar examples of others may be found further afield in the subcontinent. Some have been used for centuries while others have been introduced to the region more recently. The purpose of the following discussion is to clarify the taxonomy of this body of instruments and also to present data on the physical nature of each instrument, the performance techniques used to play each instrument and the most significant symbolic referents associated with each instrument.
