ABSTRACT

The potential danger of the current focus on spirituality is that the knowledge and wisdom developed through religious experience and learning is lost. These have a lot to offer critical spirituality in the depth of their exploration of difference, and how particular groups are marginalised. The tendency in western culture is to compartmentalise: to emphasise the differences rather than to see commonalities and this is often reflected in how our society is organised and governed. We tend, for example, to separate social and environmental issues, spiritual and social change issues. We also tend to reject the old and value the new, sometimes losing valuable learning in the process. This chapter identifies some frameworks or approaches from religion and spirituality as well as related practice which consolidate connections with critical spirituality.
