ABSTRACT

Critical social theory is helpful here in reminding us that there are certain values that we would want to affirm across religious and spiritual boundaries as well as values that we wouldn’t. A critical approach, like postmodernism, makes explicit the dynamics of power, that clearly also apply in spiritual and religious traditions, but also need to be thought about in raising spiritual issues in organisations. Sheldrake suggests that in spiritual or religious organisations ‘a particular danger for those who have power is to read a text in ways that justify the status quo‘ (1998: 184) and that it is also important to read from a critical perspective or the lens of social justice.
