ABSTRACT

In 1993, following reports of widespread and flagrant violations of international humanitarian law in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, the UN Security Council acted under the powerful Chapter VII of the UN Charter and set up the ad hoc International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia ('Tribunal' or 'ICTY'). It acted with determination to put an end to these crimes and to bring to justice the persons responsible for them. I Since then, the Tribunal has become a reality and is now in full operation.2
