TheboroughofBirkenheadwassituatedintheWirralpeninsula,ontheopposite bankoftheRiverMerseyfromLiverpool.Immediatelyadjoiningittothenorth wasthecountyboroughofWallasey.ThelargesttowninCheshire,itwasthe twenty-fourthlargestcountyboroughin1931withapopulationofjustunder 150,000.Ithadgrownrapidlyfromthe1840sduetothreemaindevelopments.
