ABSTRACT

For most people today, and certainly for a lot of Americans, terrorism since the attacks of 11 September 2001 has become more or less synonymous with high-profile attacks by militant Islamist groups. The best known and most global in its focus is al-Qaeda (or perhaps it is now more accurate to refer to ‘al-Qaeda-affiliated groups’), but other Islamist organizations operate throughout much of Southeast Asia and in the Middle East.
