ABSTRACT

This chapter explores and compares Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies within two mining sectors: gold and diamond mining. The comparison of these two mining sectors is conducted across structure, ownership, geographical distribution, history of environmental and social concerns and range of CSR strategies. CSR is a response of mining companies to the environmental and social concerns of their stakeholders. Therefore, the extent to which a mining company is engaged in the CSR practices depends on the scope of environmental and social concerns and strength of stakeholder demands. Mining companies focus on several major areas of CSR strategies in their disclosure such as environmental practices, employee policies, health and safety, community development and corporate philanthropy. Diamond mining companies disclose information concerning their CSR strategies and practices in their Annual Reports, Environmental and Social Reports and corporate websites. Corporate philanthropy is a well-established practice within the CSR sphere and diamond mining companies are no exception.
