ABSTRACT

Investigations can be contentious and generate a great deal of heat. Eachcase is different, suspects and witnesses react inconsistently and there is theever-present danger that one mistake will jeopardize everything and cause the victim serious, on-going, problems

There are few road maps for investigators to follow: it is very easy to make mistakes and to appear stupid after the event. The overriding rules are that the victims of fraud and their representatives should always act honestly within the law and in anticipation that the results and, more importantly, the methods used will be subject to the closest scrutiny in court by skilled lawyers with the benefits

of hindsight. That investigations are not popular in some quarters and particularly among criminals is a fact of life: counter-attacks and allegations, most of which will be untrue, are commonplace. If the victim company cannot stand the heat, they should not venture into the investigation kitchen and should instead let others walk away with its money.
