ABSTRACT

C ivil-military relations in India are seemingly based up on several paradoxes. lndia is a poor, overpopulated, developing country, yet it follows a demoeratic system of polity, and has achieved striking scientific and technological advances. At another level it is widely assumed that there is a nexus between such underdevelopment and military dictatorship, hut lndia has a firm tradition of civil supremacy over the military.
