ABSTRACT

Although all nodes in a network are connected and thus in theory a network is egalitarian to a degree impossible in hierarchical organizations or collectivities, in fact all nodes are not equal. All networks have similar patterns – they are bunched around hubs into which the majority of links go (Barabasi, 2003). Granovetter (1973) recognized this in his emphasis on the importance of bridges – those nodes that link clusters to other clusters.
