ABSTRACT
As is well known, first the Bonacolsi and then, from 1328, the Gonzaga took over the commune of Mantua to rule as Captains of the People and Imperial Vicars. This essay will investigate some mixed features of the Gonzaga regime in the fifteenth century, illustrating from one example in eastern Lombardy the theme expounded by Philip Jones in his famous article nearly half a century ago.1
