ABSTRACT

The presence of the person performance system in the Boeing 747-400 (8.4) suggests that many are perturbed by the monitoring problem in cockpits. The Boeing system is likely to prove unsatisfactory (8.5.2). While a human-centred technology is developed, an interim monitoring management plan is required. The aim of the plan is to reduce peripheralisation effects on monitoring by decreasing vigilance stress and role ambiguity (6.1-6.5). After the effect of flight phase is discussed, interim management changes are considered.
