ABSTRACT

Stress plays a large part in human environmental interactions. Humans do not change as rapidly as technology changes, making the incorporation of new technology potentially costly to humans in a variety of ways. This book is concerned with human behavioural responses to automation, with particular focus on the behavioural responses associated with the monitoring role. Terms like 'stress' and 'arousal' will be used frequently, but these terms have been used in many ways without precise or consistent definition (Sanders, 1983; Levine, 1986). Stress has already been considered briefly as an error modulator in the peripheralisation process (2.5.1). In this section, stress and arousal are defined and a start is made on how the processes underlying stress should be considered. This background is used to discuss the known causes of stress in cockpits, before the identification and consideration of the new stressors relevant to peripheralisation and the monitoring role.
