ABSTRACT

Glass display screens are the most prominent and eponymous feature of the modern "glass cockpit". Originally introduced in the 1940s to show the output from a nose-mounted radar, these Head-Down Displays (HDD) have become the main way to show the output from all of the onboard systems, a predominance that has been driven mainly by the need for versatility. As shown in Figure 6.11, the screens not only present pictures from sensors, but they also show the graphical images generated by the specialised computers linked to the highly automated on-board systems.
