ABSTRACT

Both coach and mentor require a range of advanced interpersonal skills to effectively help their performers. Follow-up designed to boost enthusiasm, to personalize, modify and integrate the new knowledge or skills into the learner's environment, working methods and so on was lacking. Continuous appraisal can be used to complement an existing coaching programme, or it can be conducted as part of the programme. Criticism done badly can make an otherwise good performer lose respect for the critic, and faith in the organization. Criticism, praise and feedback should all be conducted in the way that maximizes ownership and self-responsibility. Much of the information required to understand the variety of communication styles and their implications for coaching has already been covered in other sections, specifically in the Listening skills section and thinking styles as covered in the Coaching styles section. A coach or mentor in constant development uses whatever opportunities they can to improve their effectiveness.
