ABSTRACT

There is ample evidence that the Lace Market area of Nottingham, UK, is recognized as the cultural quarter of the city. As such, it stands as a good example of urban regeneration through cultural development (Rogers, 1997), and of the general proposition that 'cities are good for us' (Sherlock, 1991). In this chapter I will draw a picture of cultural activity in the Lace Market, the contribution it makes to the quality of life of the city and the general importance placed on it by local residents. Specifically, I shall point to the scale and vibrancy of the creative industries in the area.
