ABSTRACT

I claim that the rationale for the architecture of Nike World Headquarters (WHQ) is based on a few of the important and most popular general premises of Portland's regional planning creed and Oregonians' deeply engrained ethos: the protection and enhancement of the natural environment, and the desire to incorporate it into people's everyday living environments. The architecture of the adidas Village, on the other hand, is also founded on some of Portland's key planning benchmarks, but distinct from the aforementioned ones, emphasizing the push toward the creation of denser, more livable and inclusive urban physical environments and social communities.
