ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the period between June 2000 and December 2003. This was a difficult time for tourism in Israel when security threats reduced incoming tourism. This affected the pilgrimage sector, especially in 2001, 2002 and 2003, which were slump years for tourism which declined in volume to the 1970s level. With the "Second Intifada", the pilgrimage scene changed completely as many tourists and pilgrims were no longer willing to visit the Holy Land. The original research design included 12 groups of Catholic pilgrims from around the world, more especially from Europe and North America, to be interviewed in the Holy Land. The "Second Intifada", however, disrupted not only all tourism in Israel, but this research project also. Complementary methodologies were adopted in die research design. The goal of die methodology was to measure the multidimensional change in respondents in the course of the experience.
