ABSTRACT

This chapter explores two aspects of the sacred journey: the instrumental-organizational aspects of the tour and the ideological-religious spiritual aspects of the tours. The religious geography of the Holy Land evolved for many centuries in which the itinerary of those sacred journeys has established itself along church affiliation lines. Each pilgrimage trip will include visits of about 30-40 sacred sites which are concentrated in and around Jerusalem and Lake Tibberias. The itinerary of the Christian pilgrimage – for each denomination – is inflexible as the organizers and pilgrims alike would like to visit all the sacred places respective for their church. Most of the sites are tied to Jesus' life cycle in the Holy Land and the time spent in the various sites mostly dedicated to prayers, rituals, meditations and sacraments – all reinforcing the religious experience of the trip. The chapter provides a very broad definition for the sacred landscape of the Holy Land.
