ABSTRACT

Scientific advances in medicine open up possibilities unanticipated in the past. As we enter a new age of biotechnology and genetic engineering, questions arise which present new ethical dilemmas, and which must be answered in law. New scientific developments bring benefits, such as genetic screening for hereditary diseases.1 New knowledge and information bring challenges to traditional ways of understanding. Reacting to these in legal terms will involve consultation with the public, and a re-examination of the policies and values contained in current legal provisions, and new laws.
