ABSTRACT

The adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child has raised new issues in the context of the advocacy of human rights strategies for the promotion of greater participation and empowerment of children. These issues are of relevance to those who are concerned with realising children’s rights in all parts of the world. They are basic and unless resolved, may create constraints that will render international statements on children’s rights mere political rhetoric. Attention should be drawn to problems that can arise in this regard within a multi-cultural context, particularly those which are voiced in societies in which gender discrimination and female subordination exists in a very strong and profound way.
