ABSTRACT
Childhood psychiatric disorder can prevent a young person from reaching his or her full potential by dis rupting normal development. Prevention, detection, and treatment of these problems are important not only to relieve current distress but also to improve adult functioning and prevent the perpetuation of disadvan tage into the next generation. Effective service planning depends initially on accurate estimates of the preva lence of disorder in the population.
