ABSTRACT

In this chapter the operational meaning of the concept of wastage in education is presented. A conceptual framework for explaining and therefore understanding, the processes of educational wastage is formulated. The chapter concludes with a review of literature on educational wastage in the Kenyan context. As much as possible in the review of the literature on educational wastage, the formulated conceptual framework is used as an organizing frame. It is important to state at the outset that the utility of the conceptual framework is in our view, its ability to clarify those factors linked to wastage in education and not its comprehensiveness as a model for accounting for educational wastage. Indeed, we make no claim at all about the comprehensiveness of the conceptual framework.
