ABSTRACT

The blaze of colour was overwhelming. The whole church building was painted and decorated in honour of the 23rd anniversary of its foundation. In the background was the altar on a podium, with chairs for the most important members and the guest of honour. In front the benches for the singers and the children were lined up. I was fascinated in particular by the Stations of the Cross: side by side with Christian saints I noticed a figure of Buddha and of a Native American, important religious symbols in the pantheon of the Yoruba-Orisha Baptist Church. The congregation represented itself as a place for many religions.
