ABSTRACT

A journey on the subway in New York City resembles a journey through the ethnic structure of the metropolis. The change from one neighbourhood to another is reflected in the composition of the passengers in a compartment. The journey from Manhattan to Brooklyn is therefore a journey into a different world. As the train clatters over the bridge, we are leaving Manhattan, the centre of the city and the symbol of power, wealth and success. Slowly the train reaches the other side of the bridge and we are in Brooklyn, the largest part of New York City. The passengers are as ethnically diverse as the inhabitants.
