ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the part managers’ play in Australia. It looks at top directors of the top companies through primary and secondary source data and examines the demography of the ruling class. The chapter shows that how they acquire social capital, what schools they went to, what clubs they join, what committees they are on and even what they do for recreation. Cultural capital is the acquisition of merit for services to the arts and cultural pursuits. This can be gained from belonging to theatre committees, museum committees, art gallery committees, Aboriginal-related committees or charities. In February 1999, Statistics New Zealand released a report tracing changes in the distribution of New Zealanders' incomes from 1982 to 1996. This report found that 'the gap between high and low income households had grown significantly and that this increase in income inequality occurred at both personal and household levels'.
