ABSTRACT
Bulgarian folk music was shaped and reshaped by a number of political events that suppressed particular music styles while serving as catalysts for the development of others. Prior to explaining the characteristics of Bulgarian music and proceeding with analysis of repertoire, I find it necessary to contextualize the musical tradition historically, politically, and culturally.
