ABSTRACT
In this chapter, I will discuss the musical fundamentals of Bulgarian music as a preparatory step to analysis. Many of the characteristics of Bulgarian music are unique, and the establishment of a proper music vocabulary is essential for the understanding of this non-Western tradition. I will focus on structure, scales, meters, rhythm, and ornamentation in Bulgarian music.
