ABSTRACT

In the previous chapter I gave safety as a possible outcome from training, whether it be delivered under the banner of Human Factors or CRM. A concern with safety has been fundamental to aviation since its earliest days but because the technology we use to transport people has become ever more reliable, and therefore safer, the focus has shifted from the hardware to the people who control the hardware. Whereas in the last chapter I tried to show that our understanding of CRM was, perhaps, rather vague, in this chapter I want to see if our conceptualisation of safety is any more rigorous.
