ABSTRACT
For better understanding of the significance of batik patterns, it is necessary to locate them in their historical and cultural context. Let us take an example. One ought to be careful with one's words. Spoken words are able to express a hope, a prayer but also a curse. It was not right to say hati-hati (take care) to persons who were leaving since saying those words is like anticipating something bad or misfortune. One should say selamat (good luck).
