ABSTRACT
In the late ninth century, inscriptions in the Old Balinese language began to appear in Bali. Most of these inscriptions recorded the establishment of sima or the transfer of taxes and labour rights by a ruler or highly placed taxing authority to the religious foundations. Crafts specialists were among taxpayers mentioned in these inscriptions.
