ABSTRACT

The bird is either illustrated wholly or sometimes only as wings. In one instance, both wings are depicted; in another, only one of the wings is shown. In batik terminology the decorative element of wing is called lar or elar. Sometimes the motif consists of both wings with a tail, sawat. Alternatively, the far is combined with the semen motif in various forms. 'Semen' comes from the word 'semi', meaning 'the sprouting of new buds'. Birds and trees are in fact closely related since birds live in trees.
