ABSTRACT

In the textile collection at the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, a large number of textiles originating from the Indonesian Archipelago are represented. In fact, examples from many old and new centres of the Indonesian weaving tradition are present. Also, fine examples of Javanese batik have been collected. However, one is never satisfied and when the Tropenmuseum got the opportunity to acquire an important batik collection, we acted positively. We were able to purchase 50 per cent of the Harmen Veldhuisen collection. Mr Veldhuisen studied, collected and documented about 3,000 textiles over a period of 20 years and, moreover, he has published some very informative books on batik textiles.
