At the referendum 1,112,117 valid votes were cast, representing 50.1% of the Welsh electorate. There were 3,999 spoilt ballot papers. Of those voting, 559,419 (50.3%) agreed that there should be a Welsh Assembly and 552,698 (49.7%) did not agree. A ‘Yes’ majority of just 6,721.The results of the referendum were counted and announced for each local authority area in Wales.
