ABSTRACT
An understanding of the nature and significance of bank archives is greatly helped by knowledge of the changing structure and functions of banking. Historically, there are four well-defined categories of banks in Britain: clearing banks, merchant banks, discount houses and British-owned and - registered overseas banks. At their head is the Bank of England.
