ABSTRACT
The principal function of this Guide is to describe the surviving historical records of banks in England, Scotland, Wales, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. It includes goldsmith banks, country and London private banks, joint stock banks, present day clearing banks, merchant banks, British-owned overseas banks where the bank’s records remain within Britain, and discount houses. Also included are institutions that represent the collective business interests of banks and the professional and employ ment interests of bankers.
