ABSTRACT

Ella Deloria (1944) said that 'All peoples who live communally must first find some way to get along together harmoniously and with a measure of decency and order. And that way, by whatever rules and controls it is achieved is, for any people, the scheme of life that works'. I would like to share with you my own thoughts and feelings about a particular aspect of the Anishnabe 'scheme of life' and explore one application related to social work practice. In sharing my personal understanding, I will attempt to speak predominantly from my own experience and acknowledge that I am engaged in learning, as we all are, and what I know today I will hopefully know better tomorrow. My intention is not only to share my personal understanding but also to promote further exploration about how other schemes of life may similarly help human beings address the problems we all face.
