ABSTRACT
In turning to Dickens and Thackeray we move away entirely from the worlds of the classic ballad or the surviving oral traditions of time-honoured songs. As with Gaskell and Kingsley, this is partly because of the switch from a rural subject matter to an urban one, but it is not this alone that makes the difference.
