Onereasonfortherecentheightenedconcernandinterestinagingissuesis becausethepopulationisaging.BasedontheFederalAviationAdministration (FAA)annualsurveysandtheNationalTransportationSafetyBoard(NTSB) annualreportsfrom1968to1987,Bruckart(1992)estimatedthatthemeanpilot ageincreasedfrom35to40yearsandthenumberofpilotsovertheageof60 increasedfive-fold.However,anexaminationofthegeneralaviationaccidents showedadecreaseinaccidentrateoverthe20yearsperiodforeachagegroup ofa5-yearintervalfromunderage20tooverage60.
