ABSTRACT

The Australian commercial aviation industry enjoys an enviable safety record. This is at least partially due to the highly regulated environment that the industry has operated within for most of its history. This environment fostered high standards of selection, training, licensing, and aircraft maintenance and inspection, modem fleet equipment, technological advancement, and a generally healthy attitude towards individual and corporate safety. Australia's good safety record has also been assisted by the existence of a relatively benign operational flying environment, including light traffic and comparatively stable weather patterns, and by an indeterminate amount of good fortune.
