ABSTRACT
This chapter begins with an analysis of the nature of research ethics and a discussion of some of the principles that are expected to guide researchers. A number of issues are examined including the responsibilities of researchers to safeguard the welfare of participants, the notion of a 'duty of care', and the security of the data that arises from research. In conjunction with the research methodology, the consideration of ethical issues forms the basis of a research proposal.
