ABSTRACT

This research into situation awareness (SA) was initiated as a result of an unacceptability high failure rate in command training programmes at a large Pacific rim carrier. Traditional aptitude and intelligence quotient tests have been unreliable in predicting potential success in training at this level (Beaumont, 1997). Additionally, check and training personnel at the same carrier nominated SA as second only to manipulative skills in frequency of use as an indicator of command performance (Beaumont, 1997).
