ABSTRACT
John Wesley's understanding of the function of authority did not change during his life. He maintained that authority was to be exercised rigorously, without impartiality. Nor did Wesley's understanding of the source of authority undergo change; he understood authority as being from God. However, the way in which Wesley understood that authority to be communicated underwent significant change.
