ABSTRACT

The cooperative settlement attempts to combine the communal principles of the kibbutz with the familial social structure of the workers’ settlement. The aim is to fulfill communal aspirations while at the same time preserving the family cell as a basic social unit. The cooperative settlement is characterized by the following social and economic principles:1

Family membership: the family is the basic legal unit and represents a single unit of membership; the family is an autonomous consumption unit and occupies a single house. Equality in consumption according to Morelly’s principle, together with mutual aid and reciprocal responsibility. Shared production, purchasing, and sale of products. Self-labor, according to individual family composition and size. Shared assets: land, movables, means of production, and produce. The land is national land; the settlement is a single and indivisible communally owned entity.
