ABSTRACT
CognitiveTaskAnalysis(CTA)providesarevolutionarynewapproachto training,systemsdesign,andhumanresourcemanagement.Itdescribesthe cognitiveskillsthatsupportjobperformance,suchasconceptual understanding,decisionmaking,problemsolving,attentionallocation,and planningandworkloadmanagement.CTAisideallysuitedtoanalyzing manyjobsinthecomplexaviationenvironmentbecause,increasingly,these jobsplacegreatercognitivedemandsonworkers.Theyoftenrequire significantproblemsolvinganddecisionmaking,largeamountsof knowledge,teamcoordination,multi-taskingunderseveretimeconstraints, ortheyrequirethatcertainskillsbeperformedautomatically.For example,airtrafficcontrollersmustinterpretradardataquicklyand accuratelyinaneverincreasingloadofairtraffic,andcomplexavionics anddisplaysystemsplacegreaterdemandsonaircrews.
