ABSTRACT

This chapter provides methods for analyzing higher level performance strategies of individuals and teams. Chapter 9 describes methods for identifying the task decision requirements and the tactics used to accomplish them. These requirements describe specific methods for dealing with technical aspects of the task, such as how to sequence several aircraft into a single file line on an airway or how to evaluate an x-ray image of a suitcase. These tasks are often essential for success and indicative of expertise, but they are relatively low level cognitive tasks relating to detailed features of the job. Another set of requirements and tactics concerns a higher level of cognitive skill: how to manage your own cognitive resources and performance, a skill often called metacognition.
