ABSTRACT

The membership of the Orthodox churches in the worldwide ecumenical movement was well received from the First Assembly in Amsterdam in 1948. Many mainstream Protestant churches had already experienced their fellowship and dialogue in the Faith and Order Commission and were convinced of the necessity for Orthodox membership and contribution to the Council’s mission for unity. The presence of women though small, was obvious from the early days, and the work of Kathleen Bliss (England), Sarah Chakko (India) and Twila Cavert (USA) ensured that these ecumenical women would be valuable resources for the movement.
