ABSTRACT

We are all natural psychologists. Indeed, believes Humphrey (1986), human beings have an in-built aptitude for doing psychology. It is not just a clever thing to be able to do. It is a basic and necessary social skill given the sort of creatures that we are. The very size of our large skulls, claims Humphrey, is accounted for by the brain power that is required to do natural psychology. Now just in case this is beginning to sound a little removed from the humanistic leanings that we out lined in the last chapter, let me explain why the work of Humphrey offers an apt beginning to the client-centred approach.
